Mapping class group of a compact surface is the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of the surface. I will discuss some rigidity phenomena related to homomorphisms from a mapping class group to general linear groups, permutation groups and mapping class groups of other surfaces. A special attention will be given to the case of a nonorientable surface.
