無限対称群 $\mathfrak{S}_\infty$ は非I型の群であり, その有限型因子表現は, 1次元指標と無限次元 $II_1$ 型とであるが, その指標を具体的に表示する「指標公式」が 60年代にE. Thomaにより与えられた.

この指標公式の一般化を, コンパクト群 $T$ と $\mathfrak{S}_\infty$ の環積 $\mathfrak{S}_\infty(T)$に対して与える. $T$ が有限群のときと, 無限コンパクト群のときでは, 少し話が違うが, 同じ方針で研究することができる.

とくに, $T=\mathbb{Z}_2$ のときには, 無限ワイル群になり, その指標公式が Thomaの公式とどこが違うかは, なかなか面白い点である.
